- In the same way we also, when we were children, were enslaved to the elementary principles of the world.
Paul, here, talks about our former life before we came to know Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour.
We lived this life without any input from God. We need revelation from God to be enlightened to the knowledge of God.
Before we came to know God, we just followed the teachings that were handed down to us by our parents and the environment that we lived in.
Therefore, we followed the passions and desires that the world offered, rather than following the passions and desires of Christ.
The Bible says, "For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved." (2 Peter 2:19)
Therefore, when the teachings, wisdom and traditions of the world were bombarded to us, we accepted them as true, although many of them were blatant lies, upholstered by Satan himself.
Now, since we have come to Jesus Christ and entered into His kingdom, we are free from the bondage of the world and Satan.
We are rather in bondage to righteousness, which is true freedom. When we come to know Jesus and belong to Him, we are sons of God. We truly enjoy the freedom of Christ in God.
